The NOCN Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Construction) – Structural Post and Beam Carpentry is designed for operatives who are already carrying out structural post and beam carpentry duties on site and need a recognised qualification to prove occupational competence. The specification states that the qualification has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment and that the learner must be employed to undertake it.

This qualification supports learners in demonstrating practical ability, underpinning knowledge and competence relevant to structural timber framework and heavy timber post and beam work. The qualification is Level 2, has a Total Qualification Time of 650 hours, and a minimum age of 16.

Entry Requirements

To take this NVQ, delegates must be aged 16 or over and be working in a relevant shopfitting role. Because this is a competency-based NVQ achieved in a real workplace environment, learners must be able to generate evidence from the workplace and have access to suitable assessment opportunities and relevant resources. An initial assessment will be carried out before enrollment to confirm that the qualification is appropriate for the learner’s role.

    Assessment Method

    This qualification is assessed through workplace evidence, rather than a traditional classroom exam. Learners are assessed against performance and knowledge criteria and must build a Portfolio of Evidence to show that they meet the required standards for the qualification. Assessment is carried out by an occupationally competent and qualified assessor.

    Progression Opportunities

    On completion of this qualification, learners may progress to a higher-level qualification in the same or a similar occupational area. The specification also states that further training and experience could support progression into supervisory and management positions within the workplace. Industry may also accept the qualification on its own as entry to a relevant job role.

    What will my assessor do?

    Once you enrol, you will be supported by a qualified assessor who will guide you through the NVQ process, explain the evidence requirements, review your progress, and help you build your portfolio of workplace evidence. Assessment is based on performance and knowledge criteria, and your assessor will work with you to make sure the evidence you provide matches the units you are completing.

    How many units do I need to complete?

    To achieve this qualification, learners must complete all 6 mandatory units in total.

    How long does this NVQ take to complete?

    The qualification has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 560 hours and 307 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). Actual completion time can vary depending on your experience, the type of evidence available from your workplace, and how quickly you can build your portfolio.

    As an estimate therefore delegates can expect to complete the qualification within a two (2) to three (3) month period dependent on the time that they can reasonably spend on the qualification.

    There are however many factors that impact the time required to complete the qualification not least the delegates existing, experience and qualifications, and their preparedness/readiness to undertake it.  Importantly should you already have some experience or formal qualifications in structural post and beam carpentry you may be able to reduce this down considerably via recognition of prior learning (RPL).

    A number of delegates will be in a position where they can gather evidence very quickly whilst others may require considerably more time.     Are there any examinations?
