CITB Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) Courses

SSSTS Course Detail

The course will provide you with an understanding of health and safety law and how it applies to construction site supervisors.  It identifies your supervisory responsibilities in controlling a site safely through effective risk assessements, site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings. You will also learn about the monitoring of construction site activities in an effective manner and the importance of timely interventions to prevent incidents.

This two-day Site supervision safety training scheme (SSSTS) course is designed for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities.

The course is an ideal lead in for delegates who will go on to attend the 5-day site managers SMSTS Training course at a later stage of their career development.

Site supervision safety training scheme (SSSTS) Course Overview

The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

SSSTS Course Aims

To help site supervisors to:

Supervise health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their role

Develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety and welfare of workers on site

Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly.

All CITB SSSTS course candidates are required to reach or exceed a minimum level of achievement throughout the course with assessment being determined by:

Attendance

In order to achieve the learning objectives candidates must attend both days, in accordance with the course programme.

Trainer Review:

Delegates will need to pass all three elements of the trainer review to gain a pass. The three elements of the trainer review are as follows:

  • Exercise – overall, thinking about the delegate’s performance in the group exercise, did they work well as part of the team?
  • Has the delegate actively engaged with the course and the group?
  • Has the learner completed the toolbox talk?

Examination:

  • The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course.
  • The examination pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30).
  • The paper consists of 22 multiple choice questions and three short written questions. There are four safety critical questions in each exam paper. The delegate must answer all four of these questions correctly to pass the exam. The multiple-choice questions are worth 1 point each, whereas written questions can score between 1-3 marks.
  • The exam paper forms part of the overall assessment of whether a delegate has successfully achieved a satisfactory level of understanding to be awarded the Site supervision safety training scheme (SSSTS) certificate.
  • The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time.
  • Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site supervision (GE706) publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period.

Course delegates can re-sit assessments at the next possible opportunity in accordance with CITB rules. Delegates are not automatically re-entered for re-sits, so it is incumbent on the delegate to notify the course administrator of their intention to re-sit by contacting admin@goldcross-training.com. If it is agreed, you will receive confirmation of the decision once your request has been considered.

Re-Sit Requirements

Where a delegate has passed the trainer’s review and gained between 70%–77% (21, 22 or 23 out of 30) in the examination or has achieved the 80% pass rate but failed the safety critical questions, the delegate may re-sit the examination. This can either be on the same day or by resitting the exam by attending another course on the final day within a 90-day period (the delegate is not obliged to re-do the day’s course).

Charges

If a re-sit is undertaken on the same day there will be no charge to the delegate however we reserve the right to charge an appropriate admin fee if the delegate elects to undergo the resit on an alternative date.

Course Failure

Should a delegate score less than 67% (20 correct answers out of 30) in the final examination, they must attend the full SSSTS/SSSTS-R course again prior to being allowed to re-sit the examination.

Should a delegate fail a re-sit examination they will need to take the SSSTS/SSSTS-R course again.

CITB Course Accreditation & Recognition

The course is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of the Site Safety Plus course suite and also recognised by BUILDUK as meeting the required standard for site supervisors working on BUILDUK sites.

On successful completion of this course you will recieve a certificate from the CITB that will be valid for 5 years. In order to remain certified however, you will need to retake the course before the certificate expiry date.
