CSCS Black Manager’s Card — Your Complete Guide
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Black Card is provided by the CSCS in recognition of the skills held by those individuals operating in management roles in the construction industry.
If you manage teams or take responsibility for large construction projects, the CSCS Black Manager’s Card is the industry standard proof of your professional competence.
It tells employers that you meet the latest safety, technical and management requirements, and that you’re qualified to oversee complex sites with confidence.
This guide explains what the Black Card is, how to get it, what qualifications you’ll need, and how to make the most of available CITB grants before funding reductions take effect.
What Is the CSCS Black Manager’s Card?
The CSCS Black Card is issued by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) to experienced site and project managers, as well as senior technical professionals.
It confirms that you hold a recognised qualification in construction management and that you’ve demonstrated your competence through both training and experience.
A CSCS Black Card remains valid for five years, and to obtain one, you’ll need to meet both the qualification and health & safety testing criteria.
Who Needs It?
This CSCS Black card is intended for:
- Site Managers and Project Managers who plan, coordinate and monitor site activities
- Senior Supervisors progressing into management roles
- Technical Managers responsible for contracting operations, planning, or building services
If your role involves managing multiple teams, budgets, or ensuring compliance across a project, the Black Card is the correct level for you.
Qualifications Required
To apply, you must hold a construction-related NVQ or SVQ at the appropriate Level (or equivalent SCQF Level in Scotland).
Most applicants achieve this through one of the following qualifications:
- NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management
- NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations
- NVQ Level 7 in Construction Senior Management
These qualifications are work-based rather than classroom-based. You’ll be assessed on your practical experience, documentation and professional discussions rather than written exams.
At Goldcross Training, we provide structured NVQ pathways designed to fit around your work commitments, helping you gain the qualification needed for your Black Card efficiently.
The CITB Managers & Professionals (MAP) Test
Alongside your qualification, you’ll need to pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety & Environment Test, often referred to as the MAP Test.
This is a 50-question multiple-choice assessment that checks your understanding of current legislation, site safety, environmental management and leadership responsibilities.
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Pass mark: 45 out of 50 (90%)
- Validity: 2 years
Passing the MAP Test is a mandatory step for all new Black Card applications and renewals.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for the Black Card
- Gain the right qualification – complete an NVQ at the appropriate level in a relevant management discipline.
- Pass the CITB MAP Test – your pass certificate must be dated within the last two years.
- Apply via the CSCS website or app – you’ll need digital copies of your NVQ certificate, your test pass number, and payment details.
- Pay the £36 application fee – CSCS will verify your details and issue your card once approved.
Your new Black Manager’s Card will be valid for five years from the date of issue.
Renewal and the End of “Grandfather Rights”
If you already hold a Black Card, you’ll need to renew it every five years by retaking the MAP Test and confirming your qualification.
The previous Industry Accreditation route—also known as Grandfather Rights—ended on 31 December 2024.
This means that anyone who previously gained their card purely through experience must now hold a competence-based NVQ to renew or apply.
Goldcross Training can help you transition smoothly by completing an NVQ that matches your experience level, ensuring continued eligibility.
Funding
If you or your employer is registered with CITB, you may be eligible for a Short Qualification Grant to offset your NVQ costs.
For management-level NVQs (Levels 6–7), the enhanced grant of £1,500 remains available until 31 December 2025.
From 1 January 2026, this reverts to the standard £600 rate, so completing your qualification this year could save you significantly.
Goldcross Training can guide you through eligibility checks and grant claims as part of your course support.
